NURTUREart Residency for New Collaborations

Tension Rope

with Sarah Anderson

artist-in-residence July 17–July 30, 2017

Sarah Anderson and Tora López will create a series of therapeutic objects, sculpture studies and performance inquires based on their prototypical handheld self-massage tool: Tension Rope, a pliable rope that is both dense and soft, designed to access trigger points and to release tight spots in the neck and back and throughout the muscular system. Tension Rope began as an inquiry into body training, recovery technologies, and elusive physical self-improvement campaigns. Anderson and López offer us objects that promise deliverance but with a catch. Tension Rope nods to the time-honored practice of self-flagellation and mortification to attain purity. Once locked in, a cycle of shame, penance, and self-affirmation ensues. What was once offered as the cure-all quickly morphs into the contaminant.

During their residency, Anderson and López will further beta test Tension Rope collectively. Together, they will build the objects which will transform into abstracted subjects, which will be re-inserted into their individual practices in sculpture, video, and performance. Audiences are invited to touch, participate, and watch.
